— NALINI Ranjan Mohanty —
India’s gratuitous declaration that it supports Trump-Putin meeting at Alaska on Friday, 15th August, shows how desperate the Modi administration is to appease President Trump. After the US leader announced 25% punitive tariff on India if the Modi government did not stop buying Russian oil by August 27, our leader made a vague statement that he would not flinch from protecting the interest of the Indian farmers. That statement didn’t mention President Trump or his threats. But while heaping praise on President Trump’s initiative to hold talks with the Russian leader in order to find a solution to the Ukraine war, our government seems voluble.
As if that was not humiliating enough, the next statement by our External Affairs Ministry makes PM Modi, our leader, the laughing stock worldwide: “As Prime Minister Modi has said on several occasions, “This is not an era of war”. India, therefore, endorses the upcoming summit meeting and stands ready to support these efforts.”
Look at the shamelessness of the Modi establishment: it says it’s not an era of war; but it has not had the courage of conviction to call out the warmonger, Putin’s Russia, which began the horrendous war three years ago to encroach on Ukraine’s territory. Modi’s India has rather bought cheap oil from Russia that has ensured aggressor Putin’s war machine running. If PM Modi justifies this purchase in the national interest, so be it; then please stop moral hectoring by saying: “This is not the time of war”.
If, even at this late stage, India genuinely wanted the war to end, it would have insisted on a trilateral meeting with President Zelensky’s participation in the summit, just as the European leaders have done. How can you imagine ending a war without the victim nation being part of the negotiations?
We would not be surprised if Trump agrees on Friday to Putin’s diabolical demand that Ukraine cede a part of its territory for the war to end and our shameless leader endorses that agreement as well “for the sake of peace”!
