Call of Citizens for Democracy

Sonam Wangchuk

We are witnessing a dangerous drift in the name of ‘national security ‘ in the frontier province of Ladakh. The peace-loving people of Ladakh are being demonised as anti-national agitators under the influence of agents of Pakistan and China. Citizens for Democracy urge all concerned persons to become a volunteer for creating a national resistance against the suppression of the peoples movement for political justice. What can we do as ordinary men and women? Please ask yourself two questions and you will know what is to be done –

1. What have I done in the last 24 hours about the deadly attack on democracy in Ladakh?
2. What is my plan for the next 24 hours to support the demand of the release of a constructive conscience-keeper like Sonam Wangchuk and the grant of statehood to Ladakh as promised in the election manifesto of the BJP in 2019? In our view, the maligning of the day Sonam Wangchuk, the sane and voice of Himalayan India, is a shameful attempt of diverting the attention of the nation about the glaring failures of a non- performing administration.

It is important to remember that citizens‘ intervention is the only way to strengthen the process of democratic nation building. It is always damaged when repressive measures are used by an unaccountable and alienating administration. We have to convey our disapproval of killing and the best wishes injury of citizens in police firing, imposition of curfew and suspension of internet and other communication facilities in Ladakh. Let us create public pressure for restoration of dialogue and the other democratic ways of conflict resolution. The tendency to create confrontation between peoples’ power and police power is most deplorable as it is anti-democratic and anti-Constitutional.
